i went into a large out of town store the other day and had free wifi all over, do they usu a very powerful router to create this very large coverage or is it a different system? as i've got a couple of large sheds and wouldn't mind something like this myself

The maximum transmitting power of any device using radio frequencies is carefully regulated by OfCom, so it wouldn't be possible simply to have one high-powered router. Further, the power transmitted by your own wi-fi device (whether that be a tablet, phone, laptop or anything else) is only very low, so it needs to be close to a router in order to communicate with it.

So the store must be using a system of repeaters, similar to those used in big hotels.

I will just use this thread to have a moan about intrusive, ostensibly free, wifi networks that try to take over your device. Even if you choose to "forget" them, back they come, demanding your contact details. Gatwick Airport is particularly bad. I usually have to turn off wifi altogether to avoid it.

Our town has free wifi and its acheived by installing about 75 routers on top of the various shops, halls and other high buildings to provide extensive coverage. Every business within a certain area chips in to a Business Development fund which paid for the system.

If you have power in the shed and it comes from the house, could you use a homeplug? I have them indoors and they work a treat.

Or, google, extending wifi to the shed, and you"ll see a selection of solutions including information on extenders.

thanks all for your answers, i did wonder if it was done using repeaters as well,and yes methyl, it was a tall warehouse type building,i've been trying to figure out the best way to get wifi to my sheds for some months now, Now for another question--- do all routers create wifi reguardless of your ISP as i'm with talk talk phone line and B/band but see lots of BT hubs being sold on FB sites for just a few pound?,and as the are short range can several be connected to 1 phone line to create many wifi areas? if that makes any sense, My situation is 200ft from house i've 2 sheds boh steel framed buildings 1being 100ftx53ft divided into 3 on 2 levels 100x30ft, 5ft below/ajoined is 60x23 and a 40x23 each separated by 9"block walls+tin sheets. then 40ft gap alongside is shed 2 this is 1 shed 30ftx120ft would this idea of several routers work? i suppose to be safe i'm trying to get wifi to max 350ft from the house or would running this length of telephone line lose too much power. thanks for any input and hope it makes some sense to you
