how can I get broadband if my local exchange dows not yet support ADSL?

Cable is the obvious answer and if you're not in a cable area the there's satelite. The latter is a pretty poor choice for anything other than downloading large files though as there is no uplink. This means that you have to use your normal phone to request what is beamed down to you from the satelite. This can add a not inconsiderable delay as this then gets queued for transmission.
You need to contact BT and register an interest in getting your exchange upgraded. Oftel enforce a rule that if so many people (about 500 I think) register an interest, then BT MUST upgrade that exchange. Alternativly try the cable companies, some might have broadband in your area (NTL and Telewest are the biggest providers)
