When I turn it on and tap to open the book(s) I'm currently reading,it is very slow and eventually I get a message that reads

//application error
The selected application could not be started. Please try again//
...which does not work. Restating the kindle helps...until I want to open another book and I get error messages again. This started about a week ago.

Reading the posts from Lucy Winson-pearce, at the start and end of this thread, suggests that you'll need to do a factory reset:

Also...attempting to open a book of short stories I'm in the middle of,I got this -
// an error occurred. If you purchased this item from Amazon,delete the item and download it from the cloud.//
I attempted this with another book and had no joy

Ha!...I was just reading that thread. I guess I'll attempt a reset later. What happens to my books if I do that?
I don't own a Kindle but, as I read it, any books you've got stored in the Cloud can be downloaded from it after the reset. Anything else needs to be copied to your computer first. (Quote from my second link: "If you have any content that is not saved to your content library in the Cloud, be sure to transfer that content from your device to your computer via USB").
