Me Phone Problem

niece sold a phone and now the buyer is saying he is having a problem sending and receiving txts, says it worked for a couple of days and their supplier says it needs to be reset but that there is a password set on it, she cant remember setting a password on it as she herself only used it for 2 or 3 days so my question is how do we find out the password, would it be connected to the original sim as this was not used on the phone when she had it

usually default passwords are 0000 or 1234
