my mate has had random calls from Indian-sounding strangers telling him there's something wrong with his computer (which there isn't). He asked for their number, etc, and they hung up. Anyone else had such calls lately?

i don't know anybody who hasn't ...
Think everyone on this site has had these calls!
I haven't....in fact, I don't get any of these unsolicited calls at all....and no special equipment to stop them, either. Just very lucky, I guess.
I don't get enough the last one that called I kept on the phone for 40mins before I told him the router was turned off
The Indian sounding chap named Richard put the phone down on me when I told him I had just had my Windows replaced and they now needed a good polish.
What are they trying to do?
I've never had one but I don't have a landline...

Vernon...they try and get remote access to your computer and then can steal any details you have on it. Saved passwords etc...
I am getting them lately and at a time I made an appointment call with BT about my router. I put the phone aside and let them talk to the cushion ;)
Leaving the receiver next to the radio is funny, especially if it's a talk station - they talk back to it for a while.

They also try to get you to sign up to "computer support" so they can "fix" your PC.

They ask for your credit card details, but then of course then can buy anythihg once they have the credit card details.
