As Scorpiojo has indicated, there are lots of people having similar problems.

You've not told us what device you're using. (A Windows PC or laptop? An Apple Mac? An Android tablet? An iPad? Something else?). Further, you've not told us which browser you're using. It does help to know these things!

However the various tips for dealing with the problem basically come down to:
(a) running a full scan with your anti-virus software ; and/or
(b) running a full scan with Malwarebytes Ani-Malware ; and/or
(c) resetting your browser ; and/or
(d) using System Restore (on a Windows computer) to take the registry back to a time before the problem first occurred.
No problem here with Firefox - but then I do have the 'unmentionable' installed.

Have downloaded adblock plus on Chrome and Opera so will see how it goes.
Righto Barsel. If I were you I'd now reboot the computer.

Thanks Tony. I think I'll shut down for the night and go and put all the dreaded clocks back an hour. I've got that many clocks and watches and other devices, it takes me nearly an hour to change them! Night night.
G'night Barsel, best of luck tomorrow then, and best of luck with the clocks and various other devices ;-)
@Buenchico

In terms of eliminating possibilities, does it help you to know that
i) I am not suffering from these popups
ii) I *can* see the regular page ads
iii) I do not use adblock or adblock plus
iv) Browser is Safari - which does not support Adobe flash or Javascript.
