floppy disc

i have my cv stored on a floppy disc which as worked in the past. When i tried it last night i got a message saying this disc needs formatting do you want to do it now, so i clicked yes. Then it came back saying this disc can not be formated and i could not get my cv to work. As any one any ideas thanks in advance.

Well I hope you had a back-up of your CV saved somewhere because I doubt you'll get it off that floppy. It's possible that the data on it was corrupted by a magnetic source of some kind. If you'd have formatted the disk, it would have erased all the data on it anyway. If your system cannot format the disk then it's most likely beyond repair.

Floppy disks are extremely outdated, highly fragile and equally as volatile. This is why their use has been outmoded by the likes of USB memory sticks which are not only up to hundreds of times faster and have equally as many times more storage space, but they're also far less prone to simply losing your data.

Hopefully you have a back-up, else you don't have anything. If you don't then bear it in mind in future to back up your data, especially if you plan to keep it on a floppy.

The reason it doesn't work is because the disk has been formatted on a machine using the old FAT16 system.  New machines use FAT32.  You can still retreive the data on an old FAT16 machine, if you can locate one, then print it.  I'm not sure if you can use the same memory stick with both systems or even if a burnt CD will work with both systems.

CDs don't use the FAT file system, they use ISO, so they will usually work across the spectrum.

You're right about flash memory sticks having file systems though, but it seems most likely it'd come FAT32 formatted.

Did you write the CV on another computer? Some of the new PC's have very sub-standard floppy drivers - Have you bought a new disk of floppy disks lately too, only about one disk will work. As hardly anybody uses floppies nowdays, they have no quality control/
You may be able to retrieve using recovery programs such as spinrite ( http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm - cost money ) or PC Inspector File Recovery ( http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm -free)
