Why is this happening?

My Computer has a 30Gb Hard Drive, of which 6.29 Gb is in use ,an 800 mhz AMD Athlon Processor ,328 mb memory and operates on Windows Me.

lately I have noticed that when I have been connected to the internet that when I disconnect then try to shutdown the computer I get a blue box with the message the programme has stopped  working & the options wait end task & cancel when I click on end task I get the blue error screen . In the end I have to resort to either pressing the emergency restart button or the main off button on the computer. once it comes back on I can then shut down as normal. It only happens after using the internet.

Why is this happening? & is it serious?

There may be a spyware or virus program running in the background. Check!
Try spyware doctor anti spyware programme and a leading anti-virus.

I have also had  this problem, I rectified this quite easlily by ungrading to XP which is far supperior than Millenium

ranger5 I've done the virus & spyware checks & thankfully both came up clear.

hawkeye8179 Now you come to mention it I have heard other Me users having problems. The question now is are the specs of my computer good enough to run xp & is up grading simple?

Hawkeye8179 and I could fall out over ME v XP! (I absolutley refuse to have XP on my computer. I use it at work and I totally hate it. ME Rules!).

Despite my love of ME, I do recognise the 'closing after internet' problem as something that most ME users are familiar with. Running scanreg/fix, after booting from a floppy, will usually do the trick but, if not, you could always re-install ME on top of itself.

Buenchico, I've seen you write up some good advice in this place, but then you go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like I love ME!!!!! (you have to sing that last bit)

Mr Gates & his buddies were trying to release a home and office version of Windows that shared a common code base, like XP does now, but 98 & NT didn't in the past. This would have halved their development costs but they couldn't get it done on time. So they released Windows 2000, which is rock solid quality stuff as it needs to be for business, and cobbled together what is effectively a upgrade to Windows 98 SE and released it as Millenium. By their own admission, it is the worst upgrade they have released (but I can't find a quote at the moment!).

Mr Schmoe, I would heartily recommend moving to XP. Your PC is up to it according to http://tinyurl.com/29rnq and if you get an OEM version of the software from Novatech, it's just over �60.

Buenchico, you know you can make XP look and act just like Windows used to rather than the Teletubby look? Right-click the task bar, choose properties and change the start menu to "Classic". Then right-click My Computer, choose properties and on the Advanced tab, click the Performance Settings button and change it to "Adjust for best performance". Of course, if you want to stay with ME, I won't be offended in the slightest. This is just my opinion, I'm no IT genius!

Thankyou all for your advice At least I now know it's not just me and that there is life in the old computer yet.Thanks to you i now have a couple of solutions to the problem.
