I only use a laptop and an ipad, my router in in the same room as both, although often laptop runs slow on mozilla, and ipad goes very slow particularly loading the daily mirror.. Anyway I have just found some white small boxes that plug into my phone sockets, I used them before when i had a computer, should I try them and see if it makes my laptop and ipad run better? I dont want to plug them into phones in case I ruin something and it stops working.. I am not technical!

The white boxes are filters, they filter the connection from your copper line so your internet works (and possibly still works while the phone is being used).

These plug into the box that provides you with wifi.

The wifi is what your laptop and tablet connect to.

Trying to plug those white boxes in anywhere else is unlikely to help.

I don't think there's much you can do to accelerate your broadband.

Have you tried a speedtest?

I am assuming that you are using your Laptop and iPad by way of a Wireless link to your Router which is plugged into a BT Telephone socket. Furthermore the small white boxes to which you refer are ADSL filters.

It is important that every telephone socket which has anything attached to it has an ADSL filter if you using a Broadband connection......The following link should help you to sort-out matters.

@fender62......It is my understanding that Routers are designed to be left switched on and plugged into the telephone socket, at all times; even when computers/laptops etc. are switched off. It is deemed to be the case that, regularly switching off a router, will send false messages to the Telephone Exchange, suggesting that the telephone lines cannot handle the Broadband speeds and will then automatically cause a further reduction the speeds. If anyone has slow speeds it is often the fault of the Internet Service Provider being unable to handle a high level of user traffic.

A further point is that modern equipment does Not need to be Defragged. In fact, nowadays, Hard Discs benefit very little and there is really nothing to be achieved by Defragging a Solid State Drive.

Finally, I would Never recommend ccleaner because, unless used very very carefully, the Registry cleaner section could do untold damage to an operating system; even to the point of making it beyond further use. My view is, unless folk know exactly what they are doing, it is best to stay well clear of any forms of Registry cleaners.
