Mum has managed to put subtitles on her tv and now cannot get rid of them. I have tried talking it out over the phone (she lives 120 miles from me in Nth Wales) by reading through an online manual but what should work doesn't. Any ideas please have tried pressing sbtl button but no joy all other buttons seem to work fine?

what TV does she have? How does she receive it (ie freeview, sky, BT Tv etc)

Make and model of TV would help.

Panasonic TXL32S10B also any ideas as to why this site keeps freezing up on me?
Does the Panasonic Remote have a button marked as STTL, located above the 1 and 2 numeric buttons?

If so, reading the instruction manual it indicates that the STTL button switches subtitles on/off.

It that does not work, are you using a Sky or Virgin media service, as both those services will have the capability for displaying subtitles independent of the in-built TV service ?
There should be a button marked STTL next to the TEXT button on the remote - this will toggle subtitles on/off.

If this doesn't work, are you sure that the subtitles are being generated by the TV itself, rather than an attached Sky/Freeview/Freesat/NowTV/Youview box?
snap/ditto - great minds etc :)
"Any ideas please have tried pressing sbtl button but no joy"
Which is why pinkyboy and I both named the correct button (STTL not SBTL) and then offered the next avenue to be investigated, bednobs - rather than just sniping at two people trying to help.
My Humax remote has a button marked SUB which enables you to switch between OFF and ENGLISH
ie The Humax Freesat box. If you have any sort of intermediary box Sky, Virgin or whatever it is that remote you need to use. Not the tv remote. If you do not have Sky, Virgin etc and get your signal direct from the aerial there should be a similar button on the tv remote.

the tv has freeview built in and has been working fine until recently. It does have an SBTL button but despite pressing it the subtitles still remain. My only other thought is to retune the tv but mum is 83yo and is frightened of making things worse. Thanks for your suggestions anyway.
Try switching off at the mains then back on again.
aww sorry i irked you sunny dave, didn't mean to. I just presumed that susan used sbtl as a contraction of subtitle button

Did think of switch on/off at mains but tried it on my own tv(different model) but it didn't work.
The subtitle button on the Panasonic remote is marked STTL and is underneath the green button, (not the green button itself). If nothing else works, and it's a long-shot, but if the batteries are low in the remote it may function on some, but not all buttons, as happened to mine only last week.
for info my remote does malfunction quite a lot. Solution is to remove the battery cover and reseat the batteries.
