How many telephones are you buying?
Panasonic are fine.
I have a subscription to Which magazine and just logged on to their web site look at their cordless phone reviews.

Out of their 12 "best buys" they are all either Gigaset (who I have never heard of) and Panasonic.

No other brand comes close to those two.
Just bought the BT8500 - has built in truecall.

We have an automated phone call daily between 8.30 - 9am. Not any more! (Technically we still get the call, but all we get now is one ring of the corded phone, when we hear that we know the new phone is dealing with it!)
We have Panasonic with three handsets and I'd say the reviews you've read are accurate. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone with a slight hearing impediment.
I've had no problems at all with my Panasonic phones, yet I need subtitles to watch TV. There is a way of adjusting the sound on them.
