Looks like my trusty favourite WinMX is no more, so can anyone recomend a good file-sharing site as a replacement?

There is a fix that makes WinMX work again.

Go here and follow the instructions - http://p2pnet.net/story/6350

The English isn't terribly good but I managed to figure it out and now my WinMX is working again.

I'm guessing that unless a large proportion of those that were on MX apply the fix (which seems unlikely) then it won't be so good.

If you want TV, Bittorrent is good for current stuff and eDonkey/eMule for older stuff. If you get Shareaza, it handles both protocols as well as Gnutella (which I believe is the basis for Limewire which a lot of folk rate).

We use eMule but its a bit slow. Depends what you are downloading I suppose.

Thanks so much guys, for your responses -

Shipstabber - I couldn't figure out the instructions, even in English! Could you explain it like you would to an idiot ... if you get my drift! Thanks!

andy, if you don't mind paying a subscription fee, I think it was about 20 quid when I joined, for unlimited lifetime downloads try this:- P2P site. For music files I can't fault it, providing there are enough hosts downloading can take just seconds!  But for Video files it can be a long wait!  Generally I'm pleased overall, and it has easily paid for itself now!
Soulseek for music.

Simplified (I hope!) instructions.

1. go to c:winnt\system32\drivers\etc (this is for XP - please see website in my first post for other systems) and delete (or rename) the 'hosts' file.

2. go to http://205.238.40.1/hosts/hosts and 'Save As' into the above directory.  Make sure you save it as a text file.

3. This should now enable WinMX to work, but you may need to reboot.

It's true that there isn't as much stuff on but I can still find most of the things I want and with much less queueing!

Also there's Limewire which is free, (upgradeable) but slower than my first suggestion!
Andy nice to have you back.

Knowing that you are a music head; I can't recommend Soulseek highly enough. Free and comes without any shoddy spyware, and is ad free.

I've been able to download all manner of ultra obscure stuff that never appeared on other programs.

I absolutely swear by it .Definitely worth a try;

Great website and it's easy to use. Put a limitless supply of media/movies in your control and on your phone! Great stuff. I HIGHLY recommend this subscription. http://www.kazaa-platinum.com
