Smart Phones, Are They Really Glorified Mini Laptops With A Phone Attached?

yes i haven´t got a smart phone yet, but i am debating if i should really get one. i see people all the time looking at them, so is it easy to download stuff with them, or do you need to buy an expensive one to do this?

I have a smartphone which is now in a drawer at home & I have gone back to a bog standard mobile with which I can call people or text.

Smart phones dont have to be expensive and you can get 1000s of apps for free from play store, if you get an Android phone. The £35 quid phone is here ..

Personally I have a Moto g 4th generation ( it has a great camera) but I always buy my phones with Tesco clubcard points and get it for half price.
If you intend to spend your day watching you tube clips and streaming you will be better on a pay monthly contract
There are plenty good deals on call/data/ text plans and if you are not a big user you can easily run a phone for less than a tenner a month.
If you are unsure just go on PAYG to start with .. you can cancel most plans with 30 days notice. When you come to cancel they often make you an offer asking you to stay and commit to a 12 month contract. These offers are normally very attractive.

I love my smartphone.
I like having access to so many things with me wherever I am, great to have access to emails. I have Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Answerbank and a lot of news sites I go on and coffee shops, buses and trams are good for wifi round here so plenty to keep me amused when on the move.
Great being able to access the internet whenever I need to as well and have things like maps available. Even things like a cinema app so I can check out what films are on and show times and bus ones to check timetables and updates. Got my Starbucks app too to keep track of my loyalty treats like free coffees. BBC Weather so can check that and other apps.
I use an Uber app for calling taxis which take the fare from my account so I don't need cash on me and I can track the taxi and know the model and registration of the car picking me up etc... which is brilliant!
Whats App is good for messaging without having to pay out or use up text messages if you are in contact with others on it.
The camera is great on mine too and they are good for music as well. I tend to use my old phone as a music player so I don't use up to much battery on my current phone.

My use is pretty much the opposite. I don't have a data included contract so I got the service provider to turn off the data to avoid the damned phone connecting unbidden via data causing an unexpected very annoying 24 hour charge when all I was trying to do was see if I could get onto local WiFi.
If you have inclusive data then I can see an advantage to having access, nice but hardly vital; but generally speaking I only use it to surf or check e-mails and I can do that with the WiFi at my destination without charge.
I think data use gobbles up your battery charge anyway. WiFi certainly does. I can charge the phone overnight to 100%, do a bit of surfing first thing in the morning, and the next thing I know it's 25% down, or 33%, or even 50%. Best used when necessary and use your PC when home for casual stuff.

@Bathsheba ... sorry for the spelling and no I dont think you should wear Bikers. Piggy is showing an interest in grasping new technology and I believe that is a good thing. It's ok to say 'Im happy being capable of receiving the odd text and making the odd phonecall. If that suits an individual that's fine by me... but just to give an example of how useful they can be
Let me just give you a run down on what I have personally done with my smart phone today ..
Got an email to say the money was in paypal and I can now post an item I sold last night. ( the parcel was ready in the boot of my car).
An alarm went off telling me some shares I have went up rapidly .. I sold them instantly.
Took some pictures and emailed them home.
A friend asked me if I could find some obscure seeds he would like to grow. I found them and ordered them for him.
My wife sent me a picture of the washing liquid she wanted me to get on my way home.
I answered some questions from ebay buyers.
I received an email asking if I could attend an appointment this afternoon, instead of 4 weeks time.
Then I received a video of my grandson taking his first steps.
All of this was done while I was on my allotment ...
If I had a basic phone.
I would have to make another trip to the post office to post the parcel.
as well as a trip to the supermarket.
My friend who is scared of the internet, would never have found his seeds..
I would have missed my opportunity of the earlier appointment..
The ebayers would have had to wait for their answers and may have gone elsewhere .. and I would have missed out on the share price rise but instead I am more than £1k better off.
