Was thinking of buying a new computer. I need one anyway as mine is XP. This means all my files and documents won't work on Windows 8 or 10. I asked that if I bought a new pc, could they take Windows 10 off, and load Windows 7 on it, as my files will work with that. The tech team said they couldn't, as Windows 10 was pre-loaded. I couldn't believe that. I said anyone could purchase Windows 7 and load it themselves, but they said they wouldn't do it. I know they can do it, because a different store did it for a friend of mine. But they wouldn't budge, so I'll buy one from elsewhere because I know they can still be bought.

What makes you think your files won't work on Windows 10? What sort of files have you got?
Why did they tell you that your files and docs won't work on 8/10? What files are you concerned about?

Windows 10 is backwards compatible with most things....

dipee65 - you can't re-install Widows 7 if you've never had it in the first place. The article only applies to those who have upgraded to W10 from W7 or W8. The PC in question is coming with W10 installed, not upgraded from W7 or W8.
You can load a file from Microsoft that will allow early files to be opened and then, once they have, you can save in the newer format.
Ah, well, it might be a good idea to update anyway? Word 2000 is now 16 years old!

What is the file extension? .doc?

If you're determined to stick with Office 2000 it won't be long before nobody else can open your files.
Time to move on
bhg481 - Of course you are quite right. I thought you could possibly revert to Windows 7 via a download, but maybe not.
Thanks for the advice
