How could the inventor of the Telivision Baird confirm that his invention worked as i am assuming that there were no broadcasts at the time and the VCR came much later. He would have had to build a transmitter too i suppose. Where did he build one.

yes he did what you have concluded he would have to do

build a camera and a separate receiver.

As yo know he invented a system that didnt really work very well and so nothing that Baird invented is now used in a modern tee-vee.

There were a few teams working dong this. A Russian invented a usable 17 line system ? Nipkow, and a Japanese transmitted the sign 'da' in 1925 and so on.

There were some really good programmes transmitted in 1985 on this - fifty years since a high def system started, I think.

Baird didn't invent television, he was the first to demonstrate a working system using mechanical parts, based on principles already being worked on by others. In fact the main part of his televisor was the scanning ring invented by Nipkow. It was a very poor system and even though he later developed a better one that was actually used in test broadcasts by the BBC, modern television owes very little to Baird. Some of the other pioneers are covered in this article:

The transmitter and receiver were developed together. The same for the telegraph and telephone transmitter and receiver.
Modern TVs owe a lot to Philo Taylor Farnsworth.
