Quite a lot of the advancements in materials are in the field of composites. http://www.globalcomposites.com/ is a good place to find out about what's being innovated across a wide range of industries. Click on the Techo Watching link on the left. The fields with the best stuff are Aerospace, Automotive, Marine and Military.
