I have a Packard Bell dots s notebook 1GB.
The router a Thomson TG580, came with an Ethernet cable supplied by tesco as i had my broadband with them. I have just bought today a HP stream notebook pc 13-C100na and the Ethernet cable i have will not fit this device as it has square ends. If anyone could tell me the correct cable to get for the HP i would be grateful. Do i also need to get another router, if so
what type. I am new to computers so need explanation as simple as possible to understand.

many thanks

It looks as if your machine is designed to be WiFi only and as such doesn't have an Ethernet port, what you need to discover is whether your router provides WiFi, I couldn't easily find a manual
Loking at the specs it doesn't have ethernet.

It has usb3 - will find a picture to see if thats what you're looking at
Looking through the specs for your HP laptop suggests that you were trying to plug the Ethernet cable into its HDMI port, as it seems that it doesn't support an Ethernet connection.

So you'll need to connect via wifi, which your router supports. The documentation that Tesco provided with it should tell you the SSID and security key (= 'password') for it, although the SSID is often obvious anyway. Click the wireless network icon at the bottom right of your new laptop's screen. Look through the list of available networks and select your own. Tick 'Connect automatically' and click on 'Connect'. When you're asked for the security key, enter it and then on 'OK' (or whatever else Windows 10 calls the last bit). In future, whenever your new laptop is turned on and in range of your router, it will automatically connect you to the internet.

This should do you goldie.
Just had a look at your router goldie. It is wireless enabled so you should be able connect as per Buen's post. If you prefer the Ethernet cable link the gizmo I posted to you will connect into the lappie usb port.
Heres the manual for your router
