I have a printer and want to print out some of the images that are on my computer, however there doesn't seem to be a way to do this. The only print option seems to be to pay Apple to do the prints for me, surely I can print out my own photos, but how?

You seem to be expecting the operating system on your Mac to be do an additional task for you instead of seeking out specific software for that task. Any image-viewer or image-editing software should offer printing functions. The following are all freebies:

GIMP is superb. (It's every bit as good as the 'full' versions of Photoshop, costing hundreds of pounds). However it does have a steep learning curve and might be rather advanced for your needs:

(Click on 'OS X' and then use the orange download link).

Picasa (from Google) is highly-rated and very intuitive:

(Use the left-hand download link).

Photoscape X is also popular:

Depending on the age of your machine you may well have the Photos app and you can print from there.
You can print from Preview - thats part of the OS.

Do you have a digital camera - some come with image viewer programs.
Do you keep your photos in Photo? (mac app) if so, the last option in the file dropdown is “print” Assuming you have set your printer up to work with your computer, it will print direct from Photo.

Thanks for the suggestions, eventually I managed to get things printed once I'd put them in an album, now all I have to do is remember what I did!
