I Know Its Been Asked Before, Is Windows 10 Really Worth All The Hassle

i just like millions of others being pestered to download windows 10 before 29 july, i did try a few months ago, but found that i didnt have enough space on my C drive.
The question is, is it worth getting an external drive to free the space for the download?

Your PC won't be performing at its best if it is running out of space on the hard drive, so it would be a good idea to move files to an external hard drive anyway.

I have been using W10 for over 18 months, first on one machine when W10 was in beta, then on all my machines when it became available for general download.
It has breathed new life in to my elderly, underpowered netbook and runs well on all my machines.
Needless to say I am a big fan of W10. No problems with my elderly wireless printer nor my NAS drive (network access drive). All my peripherals just work.

The only thing I missed (and I knew in advance it wouldn't be available) is Windows Media Center because I have one desktop hooked up to the tv ariel and I used it to watch live tv. I have got round that by using alternative free software.

By the way, have a look at your hard drive and see if you have loads of free space on other partitions such as D: and E:

If so, move your documents, photos and music to that.

I am avoiding W 10 as one would the plague.

Whatever your Operating System is at present.......'If it aint broke, don't fix it.'

I have a similar problem to piggynose. My hard drive is very full but it's due to it being a small hard drive and the large number of programme files rather than my personal files . There isn't enough space for windows 10. But I am still being pestered to download it, and sometimes when I try to switch off the only options are Switch off and Update, Sleep and update, restart and update- there is no Don't Update option so I simply have to hold down the Start/Off button

All the up-date notices which I get have a page cancellation 'cross-box' in the top right hand side of the notification page. No way will I press anything else on the page. It always works but doesn't stop further up-date reminders a few days latter.

In less than a week I shall be released from the unwanted free offer.Hooray.

Thanks Hans. Yes, I click on the cross but sometimes when I finish a session all the log off, shut down sleep options also specify '& update'

The only way I can create space is to remove things like Adobe, Malware Bytes and HP printer programmes/files which I'd rather not do in case I can't get them back on

I'm guessing that you have a net book type thing with a 40Gb (or less) SSD?
If so, you can upgrade to Windoze 10 with an SD card. It uses the card to store the data you would need to revert back to your current operaing system.
Is it worth doing? ... Well Mocrosoft have thrown all their efforts into this OS and will, in the next few years, be withdrawing support for all previous OSs. So, to me, it makes sence to take advantage of the free update.
Windows 10 is built on the core of Windows 8 both of which are much better at using your computers resources than previous OSs (in my humble opinion)

I'm wondering if there is a solution for me- I actually have Windows 10 but the updates fail through lack of space.Would an SD card help with that?

Not sure FF how much capacity does your drive have?
You can save your pictures, documents etc to a SD card (or even your One Drive?) and you can install new programs to store their files on an external drive, that would free up space on the main drive

I only have 28GB on hard drive. Main space users are Windows and Progamme Files at over 20GB. There's also something called Users at over 3GB. I need to clear some out but it's risky when i don't know exactly what does what

"Users" is where the user data is stored. Inside will be sub folders for the different accounts, usually "Default" and your user name. In there are the files for your personal data. If you use an Email Client (like Outlook or Thunderbird) all your emails and settings are stored there... Other programs store their settings here too.
A basic Windows 10 installation should take around 16Gb (even with MS Office and Google Chrome) the rest is dead weight (as in, can be stored elsewhere)

Yes thanks- they are my docs and downloads which total just under 2GB. These include downloads like Office and some HP printer stuff and Malwarebytes downloads, plus my 500MB of docs and some bits and pieces. Overall I can see little more I can get rid of. (I do regular clean ups). I have just over 2GB spare on my C drive but Windows says it's not enough for the update.
I know it's not a big enough memory really but for £175 from Tesco it seemed worth risking as I don't use it for games// storing pictures/music

i'm using an acer aspire switch hybrid tablet. which has one main usb port, and 2 mini usb ports, so might have problems trying to use a sd card.

i think there is a sd card slot, it a mini slot, but i assume it still works. need to find out from someone.
