Your friend probably saved them in HTML format by mistake. Save the files to a convenient location on your hard drive first (rather than trying to open them directly from your email). Don't worry if they're shown as being HTML documents. Go the location of the files, RIGHT-click and select 'Open with'. Choose Microsoft Word or whichever other word processor...

Choose "save as" then you can select the format you wish.
Which word processor are you using?

microsoft office, sorry
I haven't got that. I have Open Office and when the document is open I click save as and a box appears asking me to name the document and choose a format. Perhaps you might like to ask later when Buenchico is around, he's the expert.
Have you tried opening them without saving?

I suspect they are web pages
There are two optionson the file menu - save and save as - if you choose the second there is usually as a drop down list so you can save in a different format.

I only seem to have one option and it will only save as a HTML
Can you open them?
maybe open it as HTML then copy it and paste it into a regular word page.
Have you tried saving them with a different name? Sorry to ask the obvious but you are opening them before you save as?

Save the files to a convenient location on your hard drive first (rather than trying to open them directly from your email). Don't worry if they're shown as being HTML documents.

Go the location of the files, RIGHT-click and select 'Open with'. Choose Microsoft Word or whichever other word processor is on your computer. Then go to File > Save As (not just 'Save'). Change the file format to 'Word', 'doc', 'docx' or whatever your word processor calls it. You'll then have the files back into normal Word format.
What's the difference between doc. and docx?
^^^ .doc was used as the default format by Microsoft Word until Word 2003. When Word 2007 was released it was replaced as the default by .docx (which was designed to cope with all the 'extras' offered by the newer version of Word).
Thanks.
