Windows 10 Updates

Is it possible to stop automatic updates for Windows 10 and if so, how?

why would you? they are there for security issues more than anything

Because
(a) they can slow a computer to a crawl while they're being downloaded and installed ; and
(b) if someone only has a fairly slow broadband connection, they can make services such as Now TV, Netflix, etc unusable while the downloads are taking place.

The first thing I always do with any Windows computer is to turn off automatic updates. I can then choose what (and, more importantly, when) to download them later. However one of the many things which put me off switching to Windows 10 (and why I'm still using Windows 7) is that users CAN'T turn off automatic updates. Sorry, Diddlydo!

Thank you Buenchico for info that I can trust. I'm still on Windows 7 but my husband has Windows 10 and the wretched updates keep stealing a huge chunk of our BT Broadband allowance! I'll now stop telling him that he must be able to do something about it!

It's normal to want to, to prevent some outside force taking over YOUR computer, to want to ensure some external organisation doesn't reboot your PC, perhaps losing you stuff, while you are away, and to ensure checks and installations are done when convenient to youself. Why would any sane capable individual not want to retain control of their own kit and simply be informed of an update available ? External folk should be sueable if they arrange hacking your stuff.

Depends on the version of W10 you have. I can delay/defer updates on W10 Professional

I think it forces you to select a date/time though at a time it decides to demand an answer ? I think one needs to hack the register to get a better situation.

I have set to update automatically, OG. It has never done so when I've been using the pc - always when I shut it down. It asks me first. Not a problem for me.

I just did this this morning, I also turned off the 'feature' where it uses your PC to share (i.e upload using your bandwidth) updates to the rest of the world.

I'd much rather choose if/when to make any changes to my system and have my PC reboot. Windows still notifies of updates, I'll decide what to do with them!

I have the Win 10 Pro though so can't comment if this can be done on the Home version.

To disable automatic updates in Windows 10 home, all you need to do is tell Windows that you are using a metered connection (i.e. that you have to pay for each Mb that you download). Like Android and iOS, Windows won't automatically download updates if they are likely to incur a cost to you.

Open Settings/Network and Internet
Scroll down to Advanced Options and enable "Set as Metered connection".

This will only work for a WiFi connection. For some reason, MS assumes that if you have a wired Ethernet connection, it won't be metered.
