If you can't access your settings, you will have a problem at some stage, naomi
RIGHT click on the Windows logo bottom left. This should bring a menu inc. power options. Left click on that and you should see a slider at the bottom of the screen to adjust brightness.
Jackdaw, she's tried all that, she doesn't get those options. She has sorted out the brightness using the facilities on her monitor
The brightness issue was sorted earlier today Jackdaw. Naomi cannot access the start menu that you have just suggested. We have been over that and are trying to help Naomi get her system bob on. hc has just explained nicely to Naomi what the future ramifications are liable to be without resolving this glitch. The settings menu is important Naomi for backup or reset options or to check the performance of your security systems or to check for updates and to set automatic updates etc.
Odd. Why should these options appear on a laptop and not desktop?
Naomi do you have three horizontal dots on your screen top right? If so what shows when you click on it (left click) does it drop down menu that shows settings at the bottom of the list? If it is there you close down thatenu by just clicking out of the "field"
They should Jackdaw that is the point of the thread. Please read all of the thread or you will confuse it.
thatenu =that menu

Togo, yes I do have three dots up on the right hand side. Left-click brings up 'Bing Bar Settings'. I don't use 'Bing'. I had no idea that was there.
Well Naomi the good news is that you have at least, if only by default, identified a "little" problem that is fixable, and it may be prudent, without panicking or getting at all angst ridden. I don't know if you have family or friends that a just a little teched up, but if you do it may be worth letting them read through this thread and then having a look at the link I posted to hc much earlier today. You admit that you do not do the tech stuff so I would not encourage you to do it unless you specifically ask us to. hc is a great help with the soft ware and I am not bad for an old boy, but it is a responsibility to lead someone into the unknown.
Naomi it may be worth re-posting in tech with a new question ie how to solve w10 start up menu missing. Or you are going to get a more posts on the long since cured brightness issue:))

Thanks Togo and hc .... and all. You've been a great help and I fully intend to ask my husband who is pretty good with all this stuff to take a look at the weekend. I think having him around has made me lazy with technology. I don't bother to learn what I think I don't need to know because I know he'll sort it - and then suddenly, when he's not here, I need to know it!! Oh well.....

Thanks so much everyone. :o)
Nicely done Naomi, I hope you don't mind me posting a quick line to hc. This looks like quite an interesting glitch hc and maybe one that could come up again in future. It may of course be posted as an entirely different perceived issue, but turn out to be the result of this initial registry or shell fault.

I don't mind at all. :o)
Hi Naomi,just thought I would let you read this link ref W10 start menu. The link is a BT site sponsored one. I have been having a look into the problem that your thread somehow highlighted and found it interesting. I am sure that hc will find it useful if he happens to drop back in.
