Can Pendrives Be Repaired?

I ask because i bought one a few months ago, and only the other day it refused to open any files. went back to the shop i bought it from and they said its impossible to open, and of course without a receipt no refund or money back.

What happens when you insert it into a USB port? Does absolutely nothing happen or does your computer recognise that it's there but refuse to let you access its contents?

You could try updating your chipset drivers as recent updates have played about a bit with them.

Have you plugged it into a computer , which may have done something to it ?

If i plug a memory stick into a works computer , i can't then open it on my personal computer ( one line of defense to avoid sensitive data being copied and transferred )

it has several files i want.
i´ve got 3 pcs, it only shows itself(well almost) on only one, almost like being teased, you dont get the usual pop up window to open your files, so you have to go to the home page, and click on the removable disc, once today after 3 days trying the files index opened, but refused to open any of those files.

If theres a corruption on the files or the base formattingv of the drive you are stuffed I'm afraid, reformat properly and start from fresh.

You could try some recovery software - primarily designed for use with hard disk drives; but I see no reason why they should not work on a pendrive.

If you opt for Ninefingerses advice - it is likely to change the chances of accessing the files from slim to zero.

Download and install the free version of Recuva onto the machine which will, at least, recognise that the drive exists. Run it to see what it can find:

(Just use the default 'wizard', rather than the advanced settings. Then everything is easy).

cheers chris, i´ve downloaded the piriform. i spent 4 hours trying to open that pendrive after eventually seeing the pendrive icon, and after what seemed a lifetime i managed to open it and copy&paste 2 files. I will take a look at the piriform later. thanx once again

I've had further thoughts about using Recuva. By default (i.e. when just using the simple wizard) Recuva only looks for deleted files. e.g. if you'd deleted mynovel.doc it would look for a file called ~ynovel (because that's how deleted files are labelled on a drive). However you're seeking files which haven't been deleted, so you'll probably need to use the 'advanced' wizard and find a way to get Recuva to search for ALL files on the drive.

advanced wizard? i did a scan, and when i chose the deep scan, it said i could take up to 2 days, then 2 hours later, it said 31 days. well i started again with a basic scan, and it seems to have done the trick.
