I stupidly decided to clear out a lot of the junk that I have in the house. As a natural hoarder this is really difficult for my to accomplish.

I have found a box full of wires and mice (probably dead) and I am not sure what it is safe to throw out and which would be sensible to keep.

I plan to get rid of the mice as they are most likely faulty.

I have ethernet wires, wires that have transformer thingys attached, usb->usb wires with big and little usb connections and other such things. Is it safe to get rid of all these wires?

I have other boxes to look at - I dread to think what I have stashed in them.

I always take such things to the local tip (West Berkshire) where they have recycling facilities for them.

Perfectly safe. But you'll need one of them next week. ;>)
Oh goodness, this sounds just like our house which is full of the same sort of things plus obsolete laptops, keyboards, monitors - you name it! I'd love to get rid of the lot, but know there will be some vital piece of equipment amongst it that no-one can do without.
When you say mice I assume you don't mean ones with whiskers : )
If the mice do have whiskers wolf I would sack those cats of yours as they are not earning their keep. Threaten them you'll be off to cat's rescue if the don't pull their boots up;-)
Why not check whether they still work before contributing to our throw-away society ?
My son advised me never to throw out wires of any kind as sure as fate I'll need one at some time in the future. I recycled the lot and guess what...................I've never needed one!
I've got a huge box full of electrical bits and pieces I'd like to get rid off but as 4candles says I know if I throw them out I'm bound to need one the next day.
I would keep them. As prev answers have said you will probably need one of them next week.

A small box of wires is not your biggest problem. Why not throw out some bigger rubbish...I know a man with a van who will be in your area in about 6 weeks.

Thanks everybody. I hate throwing stuff out because you just never know when you will need it.

A man with a van is a great idea: -

Two double mattresses
Two old printers
Two old desktop computers
Exercise bike
Old microwave
+++ and more.

:-)

I have spent most of the day sorting through my wires and other things that I didn't know that I owned.

I am the world's biggest hoarder!!!never get rid of anything that might be used at some point.None of it is rubbish.only two weeks ago I was making a valance for the bathroom and needed some rouching tape....drat,I thought. Then I remembered having made some curtains with it some 18 years ago so off I go to rummage amongst my materials and whatnot ,low and behold, there was some, and just enough for my need. That is just one of many times I have done this.Waste not, want not.

Kloofnek, I come from a family of hoarders so some of what I have belonged to my parents. I will keep the sensible stuff. I need to think about moving to a smaller flat for health reasons so the junk is potentially a problem.
I want to get my upstairs bedrooms carpeted this Spring. I am slowly but surely clearing out the junk room and the study. It hurts but it needs to be done.
My OH has just made me throw out a sealed jar of mincemeat it was only 9 years and 4 months out of date!
Why don't you put the items on E.Bay / Gumtree, you could eran a few££££££££££££
I'm just as bad a hoarder as everyone else has admitted to being. I've got a box full of obsolete wires, cables and mice, that I'm fairly sure I'll never need again, but can't throw them out just in case.
I really need a clear out of wardrobes already took at least 12 jackets and 8/9 trouser suits to charity shop..loads more to go
Would the local council remove the stuff for nothing?
A man with a van is going to charge for a service you might be able to get for free.

TWR, nothing of any value it's just "stuff". I gave some things to the cat orphanage. Books to Oxfam as I volunteer there.

Eddie, did you get a chance to taste it? My dad left us some leaky batteries that he was keeping for emergencies.

Tilly, I want to get rid of carpets and get wooden flooring. I have an asthmatic cat and it may help.

My flat is on two floors so it is going to be quite an upheaval.

Andrew's man and his van is a brilliant idea. It will keep him busy and out of trouble.
