I'm pleased that you've got that bit sorted. If you still experience problems with Firefox running slowly, try resetting it. Right-click on the taskbar at the bottom of your screen.
Select 'Start Task Manager'
Click the 'Processes' tab
Look for 'msseces.exe'. (If it's not there, put a tick next to 'Show processes from all users' and then look again).
Click on it, to highlight it.
Select 'End Process'
(When you're warned that your computer might blow up, the sky will crash in and global thermonuclear war will break out, go ahead and do it anyway).
That will stop MSE from running.
Then try uninstalling it again.

Phew well it uninstalled eventually after lots of switching off and on again etc etc. I also had McAffee lurking in there so uninstalled that as well. Have got Avast up and running, hopefully problem solved now .... If not I will let you know! My laptop is very old though, but I dont use it much, just such a pain when I need it to work quickly. Thanks everyone !

Go to Tools > Add-on and click on 'Extensions'
Note down the names of any extensions you want to keep (because you're about to remove them).
Close the tab.
Then go to Help > Troubleshooting Information and click on 'Refresh Firefox'. (Don't worry. You won't lose your bookmarks!)
Return to 'Extensions'. Search for and reinstall those you still need.
