Iwas shcked to discover that there's no programme with W10 that allows you to play DVDs. I've downloaded an app but every time I insert one, the default is that Windows goes to the store to find an app instead of playing. How do I change the default please?

Apologies for forgetting to spellcheck - you get the gist!
What did you download to play DVDs Taichi? The best of them are Kodi or Media Player Classic Home Theatre.

10player was the programme. Do you know how to change what happens when I insert the DVD?
Scroll down your list of programs and you should have Windows DVD Player and Windows Media Player

SlackAlice - no sadly they are not there.
Try press w key or left click w logo bottom left.
Left click cog wheel that says settings if you hover.
Left click Apps.
Left click default apps.
Left click Video Player film and tv
Left click your chosen application.
I have mine set on Film&TV that is shown as recommended for W10.
Should be because they are the default apps
However, you can always try VLC Media Player which is very good.

Togo - have done that, still the same problem, DVD insertion results in the Windows store popping up.

SlackAlice - not on my laptop. I'm running Windows 10 and have recently reset it to factory settings.
Windows DVD Player is not included with W10 - it can be downloaded from the store for £11.99 and is not worth the money.
Windows Media Player for W10 does not include DVD playback
I suggest you use VLC, a freebie that plays everything and comes highly recommended

Ok - different question - how do I find the DVD drive to look at the files on it? The DVD I'm looking at (or trying to) is not shop bought - it has some files a friend put on for me to look at - am not sure what format they are, may be MP4, maybe not.

Thanks hc, will try that too
Open File Explorer and click on the DVD drive.
Question Author
Oh heck - and file explorer is not on the list I get when I click on the windows icon :(
Have you tried typing File Explorer into the search box in settings?
Have you got a yellow folder at the bottom of your screen, in the task bar?

It will be under Windows System in your list when you click the Windows icon
Question Author
Togo - yes I found it that way thanks.

Still the same problem folks - it's not the programme that's the issue, it's what happens when I put a DVD in - it opens Windows store instead of playing the DVD.
It should bring up File Explorer Options. You may need to check the privacy boxes or do a basic set up if you have gone back to factory settings on the lappie.
