please can any photograph teccies out there help me. i am taking a photo to send digitally to the passport office to renew my passport. i have done my husband's with no problem but mine will not be accepted on the basis that 'cannot see outline of head'. i can only think the reason for this is that, every photo i take, on whatever colour background, i.e. cream, light green, pink, all come out a greyish blue. and unfortunately that is more or less the colour of my hair. when you look at the photo it is quite clear where the outline of my head is, but their equipment which looks at the digital image is clearly not able to distinguish subtle differences of colour. i can't remove the background, leaving it white, because a white background is not acceptable!! the camera is quite a good one, but i have to admit to having on auto as i am not that good with the controls. short of dyeing my hair a darker colour, i am at a loss as to what to do. i have no doubt that the ones you get from a booth will have exactly the same problem and i would have to wait a few weeks to see if it would be rejected. a proper photographer at the end of the day might have to be the solution, but i would much rather try to sort this out myself (with help) if possible as i am keen to get if off asap.

I would like to do a bit of an update on this, as so many people have been kind enough to offer help. I went down the road of changing my hair colour slightly, and changing the style so that the edges of my hair were more curly to give an irregular outline. went into max spielman (again they must be sick of seeing me), they took a photo, not accepted. A young woman there, who i havent seen before told me that they have had this problem several times with people, especially women, who have light coloured hair, and if i had a good quality photo of my own, taken exactly in line with the conditions, to send it anyway. I did this, it asked me some questions about the photo, and to explain why i thought their declining of it was wrong. after that i uploaded it again, and it said it had been accepted! so make of that what you will. i have sent in the old passport and wait with bated breath an outcome from this.
^ You must be in one of the few areas of the UK that are being allowed to use online photo's as a trial. Most of the UK still has the old system of posting off the photo with the ID statement and signature.
See the 'New Passport' thread !
well done you, glad you got that sorted out.

I had thought the online upload was available for everybody. But, to finalise this thread, as already posted i sent the photo in anyway. Lo and behold, a week or so later, a passport landed on the mat. If it works well its a wonderful service, uploaded photo on the sunday, they received my old passport on the following wednesday, and the passport arrived with me on the monday. my husband had no problem as he is dark
