Hp Officejet Fax Query

Can anyone explain the following please? I only have one phone line therefore if I connect the Fax facility on the HP Officejet 6700 Printer via the same telephone line, how will it select whether it is a phone call incoming or a fax incoming. In other words, do I have to switch somehow?.

I think that when set up your fax machine should recognise the incoming handshake series of strange beeps and electronic tones. Your fax should automatically send out a similar signal that lets the sender's machine know that your fax machine is indeed a fax machine before sending to you. The reverse happens when you are sending.
