After a round of golf,as soon as I get home I put the battery on charge. The red light comes on for quite a while then the amber for charging ..quite a while ...then the green light for finish.A few days will pass and then the day before my next round I put the battery on charge for a "top up".But the charging takes just as long as when I've played a full round. What has happened to the battery in the mean time? Thanks.

Time to buy a new battery. The old one is at the end of it's life and will not retain a charge. It will get worse until it won't charge at all. It is caused by deterioration in the battery cells , they gradually fill up with Lead Sulphate . This is a reaction to the Lead and the Sulphuric Acid that form the battery.

Sorry I should have mentioned it at first but this is a brand new battery. The one it replaced which was also new from the start behaved in exactly the same manner.I appreciate what your saying, but in this case it doesn't apply.Thanks.
Have you tried using what you know to be a fully charged battery without topping up to see how far you get?
You may be getting a false indication when you connect the charger.
Can you use another charger ? may not be the battery at all but the charger

All of your suggestions are valid but I've had the trolley from new and the first battery I referred to plus the charger, and the two elements have always charged as described in my original post.Thanks.
Take it back to where you bought it from along with your charger and get them to check both out.
