Iphone 4S Battery Dying.

Had this phone for about six years, and tend to use it fairly rarely - really only for 'emergencies'.
It takes absolute ages to power up and loses the charge very quickly.
Do you think it has had its day??

It shouldn't go that quickly. I've had my Samsung for twenty years and it still as good as new.

iPhone batteries were in the early days shocking, so that sounds about right, ensure that you have Bluetooth turned off as that also drains your battery.
If you are not using it regularly don't go to the expense of buying and iPhone pop alone to Tesco and get a phone from there it will meet your needs .

It sounds like it's had its day, jenny. Might be worth asking the supplier for a replacement? After six years, probably not although you'd expect it to last longer than that.

Yes it needs a new battery, any phone shop will fit a new one for you.
My wife has the same phone, I took it to the repair shop and they fitted a new battery while I waited , only took 2 minutes cost £29.
The repair man said that he thinks the iphone has a worse battery than other phones as he gets more of them with a duff battery than any other make. You need a special tool to open an iphone to get the battery out, I think it is a con by Apple to make more money for phone repair shops.

Apple won't replace batteries at all because they have a life and that's it! If you take the phone to a non apple shop you risk breaking the phone altogether!

You can do it yourself but it's a bit fiddly, most repair shops fit it free for just the price of the battery

Again Eddie you risk breaking the phone! iPhones are not built to have batteries replaced in them otherwise Apple would do it themselves!! The batteries are not Apple consumables and can seriously screw the phone up!!

Islay that is a rumour put about by Apple to sell more phones. My local repair shop says they fit at least 5 new batteries to iphones every day and he has never had one fail to work once the new battery is in.
6 years is good going for any phone battery just fit a new one.

needs new battery... but nowadays there are so many just as good not so expensive alternatives to iphone.. I'd go look

If you use it as you say for mostly emergencies then why not pop into the supermarket and get the cheapest pay-as you-go.
Islay, the batteries are replaceable been there and done grandkids phones.

I would say its probably more to do with the rare use of the phone, batteries generally don't like infrequent use. it needs to be fully charged and discharge, perhaps do a full reset of the phone as well back to factory settings without wiping the content, this can be done in settings-general. This problem is not only seen in old phones, newer phones can be plagued with sudden battery power loss. I have an Iphone 3s (remember those ;) ) still going strong!

Islay My wife said the same thing that the battery could not be replaced.
I took it to the repair shop and the guy actually laughed when I told him. The shop has a large notice in the window 'iPhone Batteries Replaced 6 Months Guarantee' They have not had to replace one under the guarantee in 2 years. Has it occurred to you that an Apple employee stands to gain by telling people not to replace a battery but just buy another phone? If what your friend says is true how come new iphone batteries are on sale in shops and on the net?
It would apply to a new phone that was still under warranty but not to a 6 year old one.

Well Eddie you obviously have a greater knowledge than an Apple employee whom I have known for 25 years!! You risk your phone being broken if you go elsewhere.

EDDIE is right..apple employees are on sales commission of course they will say only they can do...etc etc... complete tosh.. but look at less expensive alternatives

then just buy a new phone, Apple will take the old one as part exchange but you only get a few £s off.

As murrymints says Apple employees are on a bonus, they get money for any sale. They have a recommendation scheme, they put in the name of a potential customer and if it results in a sale they collect the bonus.

Yes jo bloggs down the road can replace your battery but you risk breaking your phone
