I recently tried to download update from SIERRA to HIGH SIERRA. I started the operation by pressing download button but after 25 minutes and two restarts following message appeared.

MAC OS COULD NOT BE INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER
File system verify or repair failed. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

I have tried restart twice but ended up with same result sand now cannot get back to SIERRA!

Can someone please help a frustrated pensioner!!

Don't really do mac, Nice. But a look through this may let you see if you still have Sierra on the pc. You may need an install of Sierra if it is not in the list of browsers on your system. I think that the upgrade you were doing has to remove the old sierra programme before installing the new so it may be missing. Can you do a system restore on you mac?

Try rebooting the Mac and hold down the Shift key while it reboots. This should take you into what's called "Safe Mode". Log in as usual and then try the upgrade again.

A write up for high sierra. Not just windows then that have bother with system upgrades. W10 has been slated by some on here, but I love it.
You on a mac Dave? If so I will dip out. I have not had access to a mac for years.
Just found this.
//Data loss during Sierra upgrade is not limited to any particular Mac machine, but it can happen on iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook Mini, etc. So Apple always recommends backup Mac hard drive with the aid of Time machine application before every OS X upgrade. The Time Machine backup will restore the previous version of OS X by recovering all the data back.//

Get rid of antivirus applications installed on your Mac machine.
Try upgrading the software in Safe mode.
Switch from wireless connection to hardwired connection.
Check whether you Mac device is suitable for Sierra upgrade.

"Time Machine" is recommended on many sites to do system recovery after High Sierra fail. I am loathe to post the link as it is not a free aid. This is free to read however.

This also appears to be very important on all the forums. Before upgrade....
Leave at least 2GB memory and 8.8 GB storage space on your Mac device.
Leave at least 45% battery in your Mac.(if not plugged in)
Do a full back up, to again Time Machine, before upgrade.

Time Machine is part of the OS.
Right Tuvok as I said I don't run a mac, but the repair tool link I found was not free. Do you think it should be posted?
Well well after another look it appears that it is "time machine" that is the problem. This needs someone I feel who is au fait with the mac system. Years since I used one.
Try davegosling suggestion above.
If you get back in Sierra, try using DiskDoctor/repair in the Utilities Folder in Applications, to check your harddisk before trying again.
Togo,
Unlikely to be a TimeMachine problem. TM is just an automated backup usually to an external hard disk.
Installing a new OS should not need the TM backup, the data is on the Mac, it is just the OS that is being swapped.
