You've certainly described the classic symptoms of insufficient signal strength. You simply plug your aerial into it (instead of whatever it's currently plugged into) and then use a fly lead (which is just a bit of aerial cable, with plugs on each end) to take the output from the booster to where your aerial used to be plugged into. Fly leads are available in many discount stores for just a pound or two.
