I can think of no reason why Edge should be considered either 'safer' or 'better' than Chrome.
If you want to try a different browser, the latest release of Firefox ('Quantum') is extremely fast:

Vivaldi

and Avant are also well worth considering

If that pop-up is offering you a link to click on, avoid it like the plague!
Instead, run Malwarebytes (if you've already got it on your computer) or install and run AdwCleaner otherwise:

I have both Minty. Edge is my preferred browser. I am using Edge now. It is not a bad idea to have at least two browsers installed anyway. In the event of one going down(not unknown) you can still get online. It can be a bit of a faff at first getting all your apps. set up and a task bar sorted but once done you are covered. Remember though to import your bookmarks( called favourite in Edge) from chrome to Edge. Adding another browser will no impact on your pc performance or slow it down. Edge is particularly suited to defender. I would also remind you to add the unmentionable to your Edge browser. There is a version for Edge.
Do not let yourself be panicked about a pop up Minty. If it was linked to a Microsoft upgrade it will be kosher. If you prefer you can use this Microsoft link.
