If I watch BBC on my TV, I have the volume on 10 or thereabouts. Some other channels I have to turn up to 20 to 24 just to be able to hear dialogue. Do different channels transmit at different volumes. Could it be anything to do with my BT YouView box.

You haven't told us the model of your tv but it may have this feature:

Does it not have the 'auto volume' facility?

Thanks all, cheers HC and Zacs, I'll have a gander at the links you have so kindly included. Didn't think the TV model would matter, especially as it's only six months old and the best 32 inch flat screen that Samsung make.
Well, Sam, you know it's six months old and top of the range. We didn't.
I've not noticed it on TV although I've noticed some times the TV volume needs increasing and then later dropping back down again.

I have noticed it regarding radio though. The main BBC four seem quieter than other local stations.

HC, I did say I didn't think the model of TV mattered, I also haven't got a clue what the model is. I like Samsung, so just got their best 32in flat screen.
