Is there any way to make pdf files from word documents other than paying a monthly fee to Adobe Acrobat?

I use Foxit - https://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf-reader/

It's free & while others are available, I can't think of names off the top of my head, sorry

I right-click on the Word doc & am given the option to "Convert to PDF in Foxit Reader".
If you install doPDF you can produce a pdf file from any program that has a 'Print' function:
http://www.dopdf.com/
(Use the big green button for the download)

When you want to save your document into pdf format, go to the File menu and select 'Print' (NOT 'Save' or 'Export). Alternatively, of course, you can use Ctrl P. You'll see that an extra (virtual) printer has been added to the list of available printers, called 'doPDF 9'. If you select that 'printer' you can then 'print' the file into pdf format. It's really easy.
Assuming you have a reasonably recent version of Word, create the document as normal, do File, Save As and choose PDF as the file format. No need to install anything else:

I use CutePDF - it sets a printer up which you can use from anywhere using the Print option from the program's drop-down menu. Select CutePDFprinter from your printer options and you the get presented with options for the directory and filename you want for it. I use it all the time from FireFox when ordering goods from, say Amazon, to acquire a PDF copy of the order.
I do what Dave G does. The easiest solution.
