My husbands Kindle has stopped letting him access BBC News. it says it is currently unavailable. Anyone else got this?

Nope. But as I said here in the US I have trouble accessing certain parts of the Beeb.

Is he trying to use a dedicated app or simply trying to access BBC News through his web browser?

If the problem is with an app, simply performing a soft reset might well fix the problem. (Hold the power button down for 20 seconds).

BBC New should load OK into his web browser though, using this link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news

Are you using Wifi or 3G?

I have tried to access this for last 2 - 3 days and get message - not available try later. I use app on Kindle via Amazon.

All good on my Kindle here in US. Using silk to access BBC.
