For some reason when I open a Blank Document or any saved document I can only see half the screen, the top half is taken up with various options for Backgrounds, says 'URL: ' first line, then options for Themes, then Background: showing various squares with the available backgrounds. I cant see any way to close this down or exit it??Any ideas? I haven't deliberately tried to alter the background, but presumably must have opened this by mistake? Help please...

You've not told us which program you're using!

Are you using a word processor (such as Microsoft Word or the relevant component of an alternative office suite, such as OpenOffice, Libre Office or WPS Office), a DTP program (such as Microsoft Publisher, QuarkXpress, Serif PagePlus) or something else? It makes a difference!
[NB: If it's Microsoft Word, we'll probably need to know the version too]

However, at a bit of a wild guess, I'll assume that it's Microsoft Word (or similar) and that you've accidentally invoked 'Web Layout':

Microsoft Word (and other word processors) can be used to create web pages, as well as print documents. When you do so, you're required to provide information about the background colours, etc, together with the URL of the website. That seems to be what you're being asked for now.

So you need to find a way to get out of 'Web Layout'. With some versions of Microsoft Word there are buttons, at the very foot of the window, which show 'Print Layout', 'Web Layout', 'Outline', etc when you hover your mouse over them. (If you can find such buttons then try clicking on 'Print Layout'). With other versions of Word you might have to look in the ribbons at the top to find a way to change from a web document to a print one.

Thanks Buenchico for your detailed reply. I found the symbol at the bottom of the window showing the background options and dragged it up (the symbol that you have on a spreadsheet, when you hover over the lines, when you want to make the columns or rows smaller or larger, sorry I cant explain it any better!), which minimised it. I suspect I haven't really solved the problem but it works in that I can now see the whole document, with just an inexplicable line saying URL: at the top.
Thanks so much for your help. I have Windows 10 and the documents are using Open Office.
You've got the Hyperlink Bar displayed.

In OpenOffice Writer, click on 'View' (at the top of the page).

Hover your mouse over 'Toolbars' and then move it across to the right-hand column which will then appear. Click on 'Hyperlink Bar' to deselect it.

Thanks again Buenchico, that did the trick!
