Samsung smart phone is driving me barmy when I text, as inverted commas and ordinary commas are on the ‘symbols’ - is there any literate way round this?

Even if your PAYG phone service doesn't provide web access (which I find to be be highly unusual) you can still use the wifi connection on your phone to connect to the internet through your home router (or via the free wifi in Wetherspoons, Asda, Tesco, McDonalds, Costa, etc. etc). So there's no reason why you can't download a different keyboard.

Try installing a different keyboard - here's a few

Thanks hc - several of those seem to have comma on same bank as letters, which is good. All I need is an inverted comma and I’m happy!

I like the Google one, but trouble is I can't download it! My phone is a Samsung Galaxy, but we're not connected to the www - it's PAYG only, no web access! And Google won't let me download it to my Mac so I can take a look at it.
Oh well, that probably applies to all those keyboards, so possibly I'm going to just get quick at switching from letters to symbols and back...

(Maybe I could sign up for www access for 24 hours and then cancel it. Or not).

Thanks Chris - Tuvok just suggested the same on a parallel thread.

I've got used to it.
If you find a great keyboard maybe let us know ?
Might try it myself.

Well...

As pointed out by Buenchico and Tuvok (on a parallel thread), downloading is not a problem, as long as I've got wifi at home - I just log on to that network, and hey presto, the WWW.

So far I've downloaded Google's g-board (what a palavar - talk about ins and outs of a chicken's bum).

But it does work, and it does have comma on same bank as letters (and full stop), so basic English is easier. I'm now looking at the other options to see if I can find one that has inverted comma as well. I'll report back.

No dice, but further searching comes up with this nice solution.

If you press and HOLD the full stop key, a selection of alternative punctuation marks comes up, including the single inverted comma. Slide your finger to the mark you want, and there it is... (Works on gboard, and allegedly on other Android keyboards, but might not work on other systems).

That'll do me, so thanks all round.
