Please help,

DELL's 3 year warranty is quite lame I have just found out. When I dial up via Tiscali, I get a message to say I am connected, but when I launch Explorer I get a message to say the Web Page Cannot Be Displayed. After hours on the phone to DELL and Tiscali neither of them can help, but I have been informed that I can pay DELL software a further 34 warranty for software, which I won't do. I've tried to delete all the ISP files, and use AOL or Wanadoo, but I still get the same message. Can anybody please help?

If you're connecting to Tiscali but can't access any web pages then the problem is with accessing their domain name server. I had a similar problem with Claranet but their support service is obviously far better because I had a solution within about 1 minute!

Try this: Go to your Dial Up Networking Folder. (That's probably something like Start > Settings > Dial Up Networking). Right-click the icon for your Tiscali connection. Click 'Properties'. Click the 'Networking' tab. Click 'TCP/IP Settings'. The top section should have a check mark in 'Server Assigned IP Address'. Leave this unchanged. The next section probably has a check mark in 'Server assigned name server addresses'. Change this by putting a check mark in 'Specify name server addresses'. The numbers in all the boxes are probably all zero. Change the top line to 212.74.112.66 Change the second line to 212.74.112.67 Leave zeros in the last two lines. Click 'OK'. Click 'OK' again. Now try connecting and accessing some pages!

Hoping this helps,

Chris

I think you are being a bit demanding expecting Dell or any other manufacturer to cover software problems in their warranty, usually when you purchase something the warranty is for the hardware, what you do to/with/about the software is your own problem.

Part of the trouble here is that most people w/o computer experience think that a computer is like a washing machine or something - plug it in and go. Yeah to start with maybe but as soon as you change something or add something kapowwww, problems.

Thanks to all who replied with an answer. Friend told me about FireFox, which I downloaded (search in Google). Loaded on to desktop, ran the program and straight on to the WEB. Much easier to use this browser. Heard a few stories about MS Explorer being the main target for these geeks to bug up. I'd recommend FireFox to all though.
