Why Does This Happen

sometimes when i click on a link to a youtube, it plays for a second then
there is an almighty thrumming sound coming from the computer, and the only thing is to shut down the computer
anyone know why it does it, and what can i do to stop it.

its like a whirring sound, amplified and very disturbing.

Possibly your computer doesn't have enough memory to play the clip (while many other "tabs" are opened) and relies on using its hard drive as "back up memory"

Without lots of techno detail it's hard to guess..

i don't know why it does it, very often youtube will play but no sound which is not good. i will try it again and see what happens, but when it whirs it sounds like the computer will blow up.

I would hazard a guess that the "whir" noise is either your hard drive working hard or a cooling fan also working hard, or maybe both.

Techo info would be required for a half reasonable diagnosis.

So, take a deep breath, maybe a dose of that stuff Sqad recommends
and a Nanna nap may help too, (for the 'putor, not you) ;-)

I'd agree with oz . Play but no sound suggests lack of resources to me. Especially if it plays ok at other times. You could check your drivers, but also see if your PC could have it's memory increased. Check your main drive for free space too.

thought it might be Dr who trying to get out of my computer, still i played the offending vid and it worked this time.

It sounds to me (no pun intended) that you may have a problem with the way your audio drivers are set up. I had a similar problem and solved it by going into the settings for audio devices. What Operating System are you running?

Windows 7 if that is what you mean, if not then i don't know, not being particularly technically minded.
