I have an old calculator powered by two AA batteries. The display is hard to see, but when you hold the calculator at the right angle the display appears, but then it disappears. It will do calculations even when the display is not visible. I have changed the batteries, but that has made no difference. The calculator is possibly 30 years old. Does the LCD have a finite life?

Yes, they have a lifespan, usually calculated by hours used rather than age
Nothing lasts forever

In the very early days of LCD digital watch displays, the digits faded way too soon...particularly when exposed to bright light. They have improved significantly, but do not last forever.
get a calculator in Poundland - a pound.
Mine is solar powered, which is rubbish for use indoors this time of year.
Solar is fine for me. This time of year I simply remove my pants, as the sun shines out
Problem solved .. when OG is charging his batteries you could pop round and share his sunshine !

It's just a thought but do you have a mobile phone .. even the most basic of phones has a calculator.
Love your answer OG - Happy Christmas !

I have to admit owning a mobile phone, but it is about as old as the calculator. It's a Nokia, no camera, and if it has calculator I've no idea how to find it. But the calculator I'm referring to is a scientific one and I needed it for calculating the sum of a geometric series. I have a solar-powered one for the simple stuff.
Suggest to someone that they buy you one for Christmas.
