With the Sansung Portable SSD - do i have to use their app to use the dwvice or treat it just as an sd card ?
Do I need to Format it?

I have the previous generation T3

No need to format; no need to use an app.

It should work straight out of the box with a Windows or Mac machine

Just think of it as akin to a USB memory stick. i.e. it's pre-formatted and comes with software for password-protecting its contents (but you're not obliged to use it).
