Decided to watch a DVD today, the first time in years. Took ages to work out how to do it but now restored it to the TV but there is a 4" black bar at the top of the TV with HDML 1 written there. Am loathe to mess about with it in case I lose all the picture again. Anyone know how to get rid?

Many thanks in advance.

There will be a button on your remote marked 'picture'. In there, there should be different settings 16:9 / Widescreen / Cinema etc etc. Scrolling through them should get rid of the black band.

I cannot see a Picture button but there is one marked Theatre.
What make / model of TV is it?
No "display" button?

Sony Bravia. No display button. It does have a Sync Menu button.
Press the HOME button, then select [Settings] at the bottom of the screen using the / buttons.
Select [Picture & Display] using the / buttons, then press the button.
Select [Screen] using the / buttons, then press the button.
Select the desired option using the / buttons, then press the button.

Nothing working, mate. Still keeps the black bar at the top. I have 3 picture modes. Vivid, Standard and Cinema. Whichever I choose the black bar remains.
is the DVD simply a 'narrow screen'

Sometimes the DVD Simply won't play to the right ratio of the TV.

Alternatively, try simply clicking 'OK' and see if it takes you fully to the HTMI 1

I don't actually have a button marked 'home' I presume it's the centre button in the middle of the arrows? Nothing happens when I press it. I have a tools button which when I press it shows the picture mode and the black bar disappears but when I press reurn so does the black bar. The TV is about 10 years old, so not up to date and the remote has few buttons.

Somehow the picture mode got changed when watching the DVD. My problem is now trying to resort back to full picture without the black bar at the top.
What model (not just make)

Is there any number eg. XY1234 on the remote.

Sounds like its a display option that is not clearing.
I guess you need to reverse whatever process you used to switch over to DVD; but you probably don't remember what it was any more than I do when I try this kind of thing. Is there an "info display" option you can unclick?
