My @ key swapped over with the speech mark symbol so When I type using the @ key I get " and vice versa the " is when I use the @ key. Hope this makes some kind of sense. I would like to know how to re-assign these keys please

Have you accidentally switched to an American keyboard?
Press the "windows" key and the space bar together.

Thanks to both of you, you were both correct and solved my problem somehow it switched over to the American keys.
Your computer thinks that you're using an 'International' (or possibly 'US') keyboard, rather than a 'UK English' one. The way to fix the problem varies slightly across different versions of Windows but hopefully the following (for Windows 7) will be close enough to the specific solution that you need for your own version of Windows:

Click Start.

Click Control Panel

Click Region & Language

Click the Keyboards & Languages tab

Click Change Keyboards

Select 'English (United Kingdom)'

Click Apply

Click OK
I'm typing too slowly these days, it seems!
