Google Play Problems

I have been trying to register a Google Play account on my mobile. When I get to the part where you add payment details, I enter my debit card details and click continue and it says I need an open network connection to proceed, but I am connected! After all, if I wasn't, I wouldn't have google Play running on my phone screen! Just to check, I looked up other internet sites on my phone, which load without trouble.
This phone connects to the net via a wireless connection to my home PC router, but as I said, it works fine for every other internet site I visit.
Any ideas appreciated!
