I have a sturdy duplex printer for heavy use, but for light colour use I have a ‘Brother J4120DW’ which costs a fortune in ink so I’m thinking it would be cheaper to buy a new printer. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

If you're not looking for photo-quality have a look at laser printers. I got fed up with my inkjet as I seemed to use more ink cleaning the heads than printing documents. Refills for colour laser-jets aren't cheap but you're not forever changing them, so they don't feel as expensive as inkjets.
Canon for me. I use non Canon inks from Jarbo on Amazon once the warranty period has expired.

Which model woofgang?
Canon for me as well.
I'm using a Canon TS5050 at present
My current newest two are an MG 7700 series which is an all in one and photoprinter and an ip8700 which is an A3. I have to say I have never had a bad one.
I've got a Canon Maxify MB2350 printer, scanner and copier, - superb quality prints, but I use the genuine cartridges which are eye-wateringly expensive, (circa 50€ for 4) woofgang says the alternative ones work OK, I haven't tried them and for most work they might be acceptable, but as a pro, I can't risk fugitive colours.

Mine are £75 for four, Khandro and they last no time at all. They're supposed to do 1200 copies but they do nothing even approaching that.
lol, my printer (an Epson, not that it matters), runs through colour cartridges in about three months even though I do no colour printing at all. I put the cheapest colour cartridges in I can afford, currently from Tesco: when I've actually done colour printing in the past, they've seemed fine.
As you may know, Naomi, when a printer tells you that a cartridge has run out, actually, it has absolutely no idea.
The software simply counts the number of pages you have printed. Some may have only one word on them.

I have a Canon. If I hold down the red triangle button for five seconds, it bypasses the software trigger forever.
When printing starts to look patchy, then I know it's time to renew the relevant cartridge.

Cheapie Canon Pixma MP280. (Had it for several years now.)
I've had nothing but trouble with Epsons. The last one caused some alarm in my village when I threw it on the fire in disgust.
Boy, those things can smoke ;o)
I have had an Epson XP530 for a couple of years.I use cheap inks and I think it's great.

my Epson is fine; the HP I had before that printed colour photos so diabolically badly I took it back and got a refund. But it may all depend just what you want to print in colour.

Loving this. Last similar one lasted 7 years.
Builder; //I have a Canon. If I hold down the red triangle button for five seconds, it bypasses the software trigger forever. //

That sounds intriguing, could you explain it more fully please?
have epson xp325 i use third party inks, i paid £5 for 12 off ebay
works fine for what i want, basic draft prints, although you do get the popup saying not original inks.
Excuse me, Naomi. Responding to Khandro...

Have a look here, K ......

I'll bet the procedure varies with the different models. This link is, I think, generic.
Builder; Thanks. Just came in from blow-torching paint off the columns on my front porch in the temperature of 35 degrees, so heading for a shower & then a beer - & will study it later. :0)

Thanks to all for your answers.
Naomi, I have a Cannon Pixma iP7250. This is solely a printer. However, the cartidge replacements are fantastic value. The printer uses 5 cartridges. Replacements can be bought on Amazon at the fantastic price of £13.99 for a box of 4 sets. See here

Oh yes. And it's a wireless printer. It cost me £65 last year.
