just two different formats, some bright sparks decided to compete against each other bringing out 2 of the same thing but that are totaly incompatiable, like VHS and Betamax did. Only difference being that people leartn from it and now produce cd players/recorders that work with both forms of + and - versions.

Actually it is not CD -R and CD +R as it does not affect CD drives.

It is actually DVDs that are effected. There are two formats: DVD + (plus) and DVD - (minus).

Most modern DVD writers can cope with both, as can most modern DVD players, but the actual DVDs disks are different.

If you are buying a DVD recorder to go alongside your TV (as opposed to go in your PC) make sure it can record both DVD+ and DVD- as not all do.

Actualy there is a third format called DVD ROM but that is not very popular, but you can still buy DVD-ROM disks.
