You won't be doing anything wrong. Is it a hard disk player?

They require (like your PC) a certain amount of room for their operatin system. My 40Gb Ipod will only hold 37.1Mb...

It seems like a rip off - and probably is, but that's how it is - If it is a memory card player, then I've no idea!

woops 37.1Gb

Thanks snapdarlich, no it's not a hard disk player but a memory card player.

Hi,

What i think snapdarlich means, is the FAT (File Allocation Tables), you should only lose about 20-30mb of a 512mb player to this. My MP3 player which is the same size, holds about 480mb happily.

I'm not certain whats causing you to lose so much space, but it might be worth reformatting the drive. or youcould try re-partitioning it, which is easy enough ona physical disk but ihavent tried on Flash RAM. The second is a bit more complex and you can easily screw upyour whole machine so be careful!

Thanks FlapperQuack, When I right-clicked on the mp3 player in windows explorer, I saw there was the option to format it, but I was worried I might muck it up! Perhaps I will try it.

also if the bit rate at which the song(s) is converted is more than 128 then it will use up more memory. My friend had similar problem. Re converting mp3 tunes to 128 seemed to get more on it.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Just a quick update - I've been emailing the people I bought the player from and they're trying to work out whats wrong - no luck yet though!
