Emmie, if you have other protection why are you running Defender ? I would just cancel it.

do you mean you've got alternative security to windows defender?

because i keep getting this pop up message to run it, it says "Important" so i have..

I have Kaspersky internet security. Which i have had for some time, and am very happy with..
Emmie,//Antivirus programs do not usually play well together, and running two at the same time will often lead to one singling out the other as a virus, or in some cases, even cause file corruption//
Installing Kaspersky should've automatically turned off Defender.

I'm unsure what's sending you warnings, but in your shoes I'd turn Defender off. And then let Kaspersky scan the PC to confirm there's no problem.

thanks guys, it gone off anyway...
A full scan will depend. How may files you have. Size and number of drives. Whether something else is trying to prevent it getting to sensitive areas of your PC. An hour is nothing to get fussed about.
its does say it will take a long time on the start up 1-2 hrs is about right
windows security built in is adequate for anyone for browsing etc on windows 10 you dont need another running at same time
