My wife bought a HP laptop couple of weeks ago. Theres one thing thats driving us up the wall and thats the constant Norton anti virus pop ups. Do we have to live with it or can we do something about it? Please dont tell us to simply download it.

I remember when I purchased a HP laptop that came with Norton security as a "bonus". Like you it drove me mad and was in constant conflict with the system inbuilt security. I uninstalled it, never to go anywhere near Norton again. I would do the same if I were you. Now you don't say whether it came ready installed with the lappie or whether they kindly gave you a disc to install Norton yourself. I remember it was a bit of a struggle to get rid oof it all and seem to recall having to install a Norton uninstall tool programme first. Will have a look for it.

C@C is right about going to settings and uninstalling the Norton programme there but I seem to recall that somehow the Norton add on left a trace buried in the registry that kept bleeding reinstalling it every time there was a system upgrade. Norton ....and other third party "security" programmes are notoriously greedy with system resources and will plague you to death with dumb reports and generous upgrade offers etc etc. It will also slow down your lappie as it runs constantly in the background( until it pops up) giving itself priority over all other actions. It is as bad as a virus.

Just a though...to get into the system Open settings.(either the windows key on keyboard or click on the windows icon bottom left)
In the menu that rises click on the cog wheel(settings) In the next menu click on Apps. In there scroll down to Norton. Left click on Norton and choose uninstall from the grey option box that appears( there is also a box that should say modify. Ignore it)

When I bought my HP laptop I had same problem so I put on REVO uninstaller and it got rid of norton altogether. It's a free program and easy to use.

Togo, the norton didnt come installed with the lappie. As i said before i usually get zillions of pop ups asking me to install it. According to the shop if we see it again just to right click the mouse and click on dont show.

Ahhh it is an ad that is popping up. You can stop those, from all sources, in the settings also. Menu 3 is best for that. Click on the three dots ... Top right. Scroll down to the cog wheel "settings". In the menu that appears and click on "Site Permissions". Scroll down and find Pop ups and redirects. Select Block. Very useful stuff in those settings menus that help to get rid of all sorts of carp. You can sort Ads out as well and notifications and permissions regarding downloads etc.

Togo's advice is sound but there might also be something on your laptop which is either directly generating those pop-ups or making a call on a remote website to do so.

So CAC's advice to go into you list of installed apps and uninstall anything that mention Norton also hold true.

Further, a malware scan wouldn't go amiss here. If you've already installed the free version Malwarebytes Anti-Malware onto your laptop, then run that. (However I no longer recommend a fresh installation of that program, as it comes with a free trial of the full software, that seems to slow some computers down quite a bit). Otherwise download and run AdwCleaner (it's 'out of the same stable' anyway). There's no installation process; you just run the downloaded file directly:
